Known Issue: Windows 10 alternate authentication methods do not provide access to file shares and print queues

Once you sign into Windows using your PIN or a fingerprint scan or a FIDO2 security key, you will not automatically gain access to on-prem Active Directory file shares or print queues. When you click on a file share network location shortcut in your Windows Explorer, after a brief pause, Windows will present "enter your credentials" dialogue box.

If you are frequently using these resources, you should use your password to sign into Windows instead of using PIN or apply one of the two the workarounds.

Workaround 1 (recommended)

  1. Press Windows logo key and L key on your keyboard at the same time to lock your Windows. This will take you back to the Windows login page.
  2. On the Windows login page, click on Sign-in Options then click on the key icon.
  3. Enter your UWin Account password when prompted and press Enter.

At this point, you will be able to access all on-prem resources that were previously unavailable.

Workaround 2

When prompted to enter your credentials, enter your e-mail address in the format UWinID@uwindsor.ca and your UWin Account password and check the box next to Remember my credentials then click OK.

When prompted to re-enter your PIN,

  1. Click on More choices
  2. Click on Use a different account
  3. Select you account from the list
  4. Enter your e-mail address in the format UWinID@uwindsor.ca and your UWin Account password and check the box next to Remember my credentials then click OK
