Student Computing Resource Requirements

Summary

Recommended minimum computing resources for students

Body

What kind of computer or technology do I require?

Overview

To support your studies, you will require access to particular computer hardware and software for most UWindsor courses.  The UWindsor standard computing platform supported by IT Services is a device running current, supported versions of Microsoft Windows and MS Office 365.

Please note for any devices not running these operating systems, IT Services may provide limited support.

Minimum and Recommended Computing Requirements

The minimum requirement for most courses is a device with a current web browser, email and general software capability to send and receive course-related documents.

Operating Systems

Microsoft Windows 11 is recommended

Apple OS X and Chrome OS with Microsoft Office may also work for many courses, but limited IT support may be available

Other operating systems may work, but are not supported by IT Services

Computer System

computer system meeting the requirements below should be used for UWindsor courses:

A newer model Windows-based computer complete with a monitor, mouse and keyboard

  • Microsoft Office 365 (available for free for all UWindsor students)
  • OneDrive
  • Security software (e.g. anti-virus, firewall, etc.)
  • Current Web Browser(s) (e.g. Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox)
  • Web Camera and Microphone (may be built into the device)
  • Speakers / Headphones

RAM/Memory 4 GB 8 GB
Storage N/A 500 GB (or greater) internal SSD
Screen Resolution 1024 x 768 Highest recommended setting for your monitor

Adaptive Technology Software Requirements

If you are operating adaptive technology software at home for remote learning purposes, please note that the identified recommendations above may not be sufficient and that systems with greater capabilities may be required.

For additional questions regarding this software, you should contact Student Accessibility Services at (519) 253-3000 ext. 3463, or sas@uwindsor.ca.

For additional questions about the minimum and recommended computing requirements, you can contact IT Services at (519) 253-3000 ext. 4440.

Internet Connectivity

You are responsible for all Internet Service Providers (ISP), phone, or any other communications service requirement. Below are minimum connectivity recommendations:

Internet Download Speed 15.0 Mbps
Internet Upload Speed 5.0 Mbps

Alternate Connectivity Options

Where broadband connectivity may not be readily available, tethering to a mobile device such as a smartphone with a strong LTE signal may provide a basic connection.

  • Note: Mobile Internet connectivity through a tethered mobile device will likely not be adequate for ongoing online video collaboration. The network latency and unreliable nature of cellular connectivity can result in poor video quality.
  • Note: Use of internet connections (e.g. broadband or mobile) may also cause monthly data plan allowance limits to be exceeded and result in significant overage charges. For this reason, an unlimited data plan, if available, is highly recommended.

Disclaimer

The above-recommended minimum requirements may be subject to change without notice based on rapidly changing industry standards, continuous development of technology, or unanticipated course changes. You may be required to upgrade your systems or network connections to maintain access to course materials and required programs. All efforts will be made to provide alternate access to specialized software (remote access) when required.
