Known Issue: Can't add a person to a private channel

Summary

Before a new member can be added to the private channel, they have to be first added as a member to the team that is hosting the private channel.

Body

Private channels is a feature that allows to divide members of a team into sub-teams. Each private channel has its own list of members which is a subset of the members of the larger team. Before a new member can be added to the private channel, they have to be first added as a member to the team that is hosting the private channel.

To add someone to a team if you are a designated team owner:

  1. Click on the three dots next to team's name and select Add Member.
  2. Start typing person's name, then select it when it appears as a suggestion. Repeat this step for each person you want to add as member (i.e. you can add multiple people at once).
  3. Click on Add button.
  4. Click on Close button.

Note that if you're a team owner, when you add someone to a team that person will become a member instantly. If you're not a team owner, when you add someone to a team your change is submitted as a request, and the team owner will need to accept it before you can proceed with adding this person to a private channel.

To add someone to a team if you are not a designated team owner:

  1. Click on the three dots next to team's name and select Add Member.
  2. Start typing person's name, then select it when it appears as a suggestion. Repeat this step for each person you want to add as member (i.e. you can add multiple people at once).
  3. Click on Send Request button.

To see all members of a team and their assigned roles, click on the three dots next to team's name and select Manage Team.

To add an existing member of a team to a private channel:

  1. Click on the three dots next to channel's name and select Add members. If you do not see this option on the mean, it means that your channel is not private.
  2. Start typing person's name, then select it when it appears as a suggestion. Repeat this step for each person you want to add as member (i.e. you can add multiple people at once).
  3. Click on Add button.
  4. Click on Close button.

Each department has two main teams: one for internal collaboration (i.e. "internal team"), and one for collaborating with users outside of the department (i.e. "external team"). These teams are made up of channels, which are the collaboration spaces within each team in which the actual work is done. Private channels are used to partition each of these teams into sub-teams eliminating the need to create new teams.
