The maximum number of items in a SharePoint list view, or a folder in a Document Library is 5,000 items. You can store more than 5,000 items in a list or Document Library folder, but you may get the view threshold error message when the list is larger than 5,000 items in a single view.
This is usually caused by the default sorting setting in the view. There are a number of ways to correct this as described below.
Please note that you are able to still sort the view by the contents of the columns by clicking on the column title and you can still use filters, but it is the default sorting on large lists that is the problem.
Fix #1: Remove the default sorting value on the view
From the All Documents view name in the upper right, open the menu and select "Edit Current View"
In the Sorting section, change all options to "None"
Also ensure that grouping, and totals are set to None for all columns.
Additionally, deselect the columns that you do not need in the view.
Fix #2: Create a new view that results less than 5,000 items
From the view pull down menu, select "Create New View" and choose the desired view type.
From the view pull down menu, select "Edit this View"
In the Filters section, enter search criteria that will reduce the number of items in the view to less than 5,000.
