Question

What is a TOTP Verification Code?

Answer

Microsoft Authenticator can generate a Time-based One-Time Password to allow you to access MFA-protected resources. The app generates a 6-digit code (Time-based One-Time Password or TOTP) that refreshes every 30 seconds. This method is enabled by default once you install Microsoft Authenticator.

How it works:

  • Open Authenticator to retrieve current code
  • Enter the code manually when prompted on device to which you were signing in

Best for:

  • Offline use of your mobile device

NOTE: This authentication method is not phishing resistant and is no longer available for new users. Existing users will be asked to transition to a passkey.
