Grading using Outcomes in assessments

Summary

If you have aligned learning outcomes to your assessments, grade your assessment as normal and select the achievement level, if it is not automatically done by the system.

Body

Assignments and Discussions

  1. While grading an Assignment submission or a Discussion Topic post without a rubric, you will see the directly aligned outcomes at the bottom of the right-hand grading panel. Select the appropriate achievement level for the learning outcome(s) for the assignment or discussion post.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ENGINEERING: Selecting an achievement level is NOT necessary for accreditation data, nor does it affect the data. Selecting an achievement level is necessary for students to see how they are progressing.

Assignments and Discussions with Rubrics

  1. While grading an Assignment submission or a Discussion Topic post with a rubric, you will see a bulls eye icon to the right of any criteria aligned with an outcome.Uploaded image
  1. When evaluating with the rubric, the achievement level of the aligned learning outcome will automatically be selected based on the achievement level-rubric level mappings.
  2. You will see the learning outcomes that have been indirectly aligned to this assignment through a rubric, at the bottom of the right-hand grading panel. You can change any of the levels by clicking on the new level.
(Note: Manual changes to the levels will not be reflected in the Engineering accreditation data.)Uploaded image

Note: Removing a rubric containing learning outcomes does not affect any previously assessed learning outcomes. For example, if you assess a student in a learning outcome and then remove the rubric, the assessment is hidden; it is not deleted. Re-adding the rubric makes the outcome assessment visible again.

Quizzes

  1. While grading a quiz, or reviewing an automatically graded quiz, you will see the aligned outcomes at the bottom of the screen. Brightspace suggests a level of achievement for each outcome based on the grade of the question(s) it was aligned with. You can change any of the levels by clicking on the new level but changes are not reflected in accreditation data.
  2. Written response questions will require you to grade the item before a level is selected.
  3. Click Save as Draft or Update when you are done.
decorativeNote: An icon for the outcomes tag appears on the far right of the quiz question. You can click the icon to refresh your memory of which learning outcome(s) is aligned with the question.decorative
