Body
If your Apple MacOS device is connected to the UWindsor wireless network, you are able to print any of the over twenty GoPrint printers on campus, and pay using your UwinCARD.
Before you can use the printer, you will need to download and install the GoPrint Web Client program and add the printer to your system as described in this artcle.
Process Overview
The printing procedure involves a number of steps. The two steps in the orange box below will need to be done once on your computer.
Installing GoPrint Web Client
Download the GoPrint_MacOS.zip file using the link in the Files section of this page. It will be saved in your Downloads folder. Open the Downloads folder in Finder and double click on the GoPrint_MacOS.zip file if necessary to expand the GoPrint Web Client application file. Drag the GoPrint Web Client file over to the Applications folder.
Click on the Applications folder icon and view all of the applications. Find GoPrint Web Client and double-click it to start.
Note: If you get a security warning, you will need to authorize the application as follows:
- Select System Preferences from the Apple menu (top left corner of your screen)
- Click on Security and Privacy
- Select the General tab
- At the bottom you will see the message "GoPrint Web Client" was blocked from opening. Click on the Open Anyway button
When you run the GoPrint Web client for the first time, it will prompt you for server name. Enter uwgoprint.uwinad.uwindsor.ca
Once the GoPrint Web Client is running, you will see its icon in the dock. If you expect to be printing often, you can right-click on the icon in the dock and select Open at Login in the Options menu to automatically run it whenever you login. If you choose not to automatically run it, then you will need to start GoPrint Web Client every time you want to print a file so that you can identify and secure your work.
Adding the Printer to your System
You will also need to add the appropriate printer to your system. This is an easy process, but you will need to determine the queue name of the printer. The queue name is usually of the format: name of lab _ printer type -HOLD. A list of queues can be found in this knowledge base article.
- From the Apple menu, select System Preferences,
- Double-click on Printers and Scanners.
- Press the + (plus) button under the list of printers.
- In the new window, choose IP at the top of the window
- Select Line Printer Daemon - LPD as the protocol
- Enter uwgoprint.uwinad.uwindsor.ca as the Address
- Enter the appropriate queue name. It must match the queue name on the GoPrint server (see KB article)
- Change the Name and Location to how you want the printer to appear on your system
- Press the Add button
The Printing Process
Assuming that the GoPrint Web client is running, when a file is sent to a printer that is attached to a GoPrint queue, a popup window will appear a few moments after the print job has been sent.
Here you can specify a name and a password. The name will appear as a button on the release station. There you can select the button name and enter the password, then follow the prompts to confirm and swipe your UWin card to complete the process.
Setting up the GoPrint client for all users
When you install the GoPrint Web client, it is for the currently logged in user. If you want all users, including Guest, to be able to use the service, then you will need to copy the preferences file to the system area.
Login as the user who installed the GoPrint Web client and then start the Terminal application. It can be found in Applications under the Utility folder. Enter the following command:
sudo cp ~/Library/Preferences/com.goprint.popup.plist /Library/Preferences
