Sophos PureMessage

The University of Windsor uses the PureMessage software by Sophos for e-mail filtering. All faculty/staff (Office 365) and student (UWin Gmail) e-mail accounts are automatically set up to use the spam filter. When your e-mail passes through the spam filter, it is examined and given a score reflecting the probability that it is spam. All e-mail messages that are determined to be spam are quarantined on the server and you will receive a daily digest that includes an itemized list of messages that are being held in quarantine.

The following rules are being used by PureMessage spam filter:

  • All mail that scores between 90%-100% will be discarded.

  • All mail that scores between 50% - 90% will be quarantined. Every day at about 3:00 a.m. a digest will be sent to you from the PureMessage Administrator account that informs you of all e-mail that has been received and quarantined within the last 24 hours. Users can release messages from quarantine if they are deemed to be legitimate messages (i.e. false positives). See "Related Articles" on the right for additional information and instructions.

  • Mail that contains words on the "offensive words" list will be quarantined, even if they score less than 50%. The list that we use comes pre-configured from Sophos with several hundred words and phrases that are generally considered to be unacceptable in corporate e-mail communications.

  • Mail that contains attachments specified in the suspect attachment Names list will be rejected and returned to the sender. To secure our campus computers from worms and viruses that can spread through e-mail, a number of different types of file attachments are not allowed to enter our system. According to I.T. industry best practices, files with these extensions have a high probability of containing a virus, worm or some other form of malicious code.

  •  All other mail that scores less than 50% will be delivered to your mailbox.
