What is the difference between a primary and preferred name?

A student’s primary name is their legal name and is provided on their university application. It can only be changed with official documentation.

A student’s preferred name is the name a student chooses to go by and if desired can be provided on their university application. Preferred name will be used on class rosters and can be changed by visiting the Registrar’s Office in-person with a UWinCARD.
