What is LinkedIn Learning? (formally Lynda.com)

Lynda.com, an e-learning and training website for software, technology, business, and creative skills, is rebranding as LinkedIn Learning. LinkedIn acquired Lynda.com in 2015 and is now moving to make valuable feature upgrades in addition to rebranding. LinkedIn Learning is available to University of Windsor faculty, staff, and students with a valid UWinID.

What does this mean for me?

On August 5, 2019, the Lynda.com platform will be upgraded to LinkedIn Learning. Once the upgrade is complete, you will receive an email directly from LinkedIn Learning with an activation link.  When that email arrives, use the link to activate your new LinkedIn Learning account for an enhanced user experience that features instructional content relevant to your professional interests and goals.

What will happen to my Lynda.com data?

When the migration from Lynda.com to LinkedIn Learning is complete, all your Lynda.com data (such as learning activity) will be transferred to your new LinkedIn Learning account. After the migration, your Lynda.com account will not be accessible, and all learning will occur within the LinkedIn Learning platform. However, since LinkedIn Learning contains the full Lynda.com content library, you’ll be able to pick up your learning right where you left off.

LinkedIn Learning combines Lynda.com’s high-quality courses with insights from LinkedIn data to provide you with personalized course recommendations based on your current job, skills, and interests.

Do I need to link my Uwindsor LinkedIn Learning account with my personal LinkedIn account?

When you activate your LinkedIn Learning account, you will be offered the option of linking it to your personal LinkedIn account. If you'd like to do this, have your existing LinkedIn username and password handy.  However, linking your Uwindsor LinkedIn Lerning account with your personal LinkedIn account is not necessary.

You'll also have the option of creating a new LinkedIn account if you don't already have one.

One advantage of linking accounts is that you'll receive personalized learning recommendations based on your LinkedIn profile and on what LinkedIn users with similar positions are learning. Another is that you can preserve your LinkedIn Learning course history even after you leave the University of Windsor.

Once you leave the University of Windsor you will not be able to log into LinkedIn Learning with your UWindsor credentials, but if you have linked to your LinkedIn account:

Your course usage data from your time at UWindsor will be preserved in your LinkedIn account

When you again have access to LinkedIn Learning, your existing usage data will be added to your new LinkedIn Learning account

The University of Windsor will not have access to course usage data created after you leave the University

Other information you should know

You do not have to have or create a LinkedIn account to use your LinkedIn Learning account. They are separate systems.

If you do have a LinkedIn account, you can choose to link it at the time you activate LinkedIn Learning or leave the decision for later.

Your LinkedIn profile can use a different email address than your LinkedIn Learning account. You don't have to use your University of Windsor email address for LinkedIn.

Linking your accounts does not give the University access to your private LinkedIn data. The University of Windsor can see only your name, profile photo and course usage data.
