How to configure DNS settings in Windows 7

These instructions apply only to a computer located on campus which is connected to campus LAN via a network cable plugged into the wall jack (wired connection), or a laptop which is connected to the University wireless network, and are geared towards Windows 7 users.

 

PART 1

Verifying that your "Primary DNS Suffix" is set correctly

 

1. Click the Windows Start (Microsoft logo) button and then right-click on select Control Panel form the menu to open it.

 

 

 

 

2. click on "Change settings"

 

 

 

 

3. Click the "Change" button.

 

 

 

 

4. Click the "More" button"

 

 
 

 

5. Ensure that "uwindsor.ca" (without quotes) appears in the field below "Primary DNS suffix of this computer.

 

 

 

 

5. Close all dialogue boxes by clicking the "OK" button. You will be prompted to reboot your computer for the changes to go into effect. Please do so.

 

 

 

PART 2

Verifying your DNS settings in Network Settings

 

Once you log back into Windows, you will need to review your DNS settings for your network connection.

 

 

1. Click the Windows Start (Microsoft logo) button and select Control Panel form the menu to open it.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Find Network and Sharing Center icon inside Control Panel and single-click it to open it.

 

 

 

 

3. Click on "change adapter settings"

 

 

 

 

 

4. Locate the icon that represents your current connection. Right-click on it and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

 

 

 

 

5. Inside the Connection Properties box, scroll down the list of items and select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", then click the "Properties" button.

 

 

 

 

6.  Inside the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties box, locate and click the "Advanced" button.

 

 

 

 

7.  Inside the Advanced TCP/IP Settings locate the line near the bottom that says "DNS suffix for this connection". Replace the existing value with "uwindsor.ca" (without the quotes), as shown below.

 

 

 

 

8. Close all dialogue boxes by clicking the "OK" button.
