There are two possible options for this use case: multi-user setup or primary-user setup. You have to make a decision on which setup option works better for your specific situation, and once you do, you have to stick with the procedure associated with that option. You cannot mix elements from both options.
Multi-User Setup
You can treat the workstation as a multi-user machine, in which case it would be joined to Azure AD using a provisioning package. If the current user needs to be able to install software on this computer, you will need to elevate their access, as explained in this KB article. The main advantage of this option is that you will not need to perform Windows reset when a new user takes over, and you can set this up without user being involved (i.e. no user credentials required during setup).
- Use provisioning package to join to Azure AD (KB82591)
- Leave the "Primary User" field on asset record empty
- Add names of users of this workstation on the "Users" tab on asset record
- Optional: Add name of the professor in the "Fiscal Owner" field on the asset record
- Optional: Elevate access of the user on that machine (KB62368)
Primary-user Setup
If you treat the workstation as a primary-user machine, the graduate student will be the primary user. When joining to Azure AD, grad student's UWin Account credentials must be used.
- Join to Azure AD in Accounts > Access work or school for workstations with Windows already installed and initialised (KB82591), or during OOBE for new installations (KB65038). In both cases user credentials must be used.
- Enter name of the grad student in "Primary User" field on asset record
- Optional: Add name of the professor in the "Fiscal Owner" field on the asset record
