Rules and Considerations when Selecting Optional Life and AD&D Coverages

By default, UWinsite People (UWP) is set up to waive the coverage. If applicable, you can choose Optional Life and AD&D coverages and you will be responsible for the cost. You can select these options when you enroll yourself and/or your contacts in benefit coverage. This article covers important rules related to the Optional Life and AD&D coverages.

  1. To purchase Optional Life and AD&D coverages, select covered and deselect waived to avoid enrolment errors in UWP.
  2. Then add your beneficiaries for Employee Optional Life and Employee Optional AD&D, if elected. The Spousal Optional Life/AD&D coverages and the Dependent Optional Life/AD&D coverages will be assigned to you automatically if you choose these types of coverage.

Special Rules to Note:

  • If this is your first benefit enrollment with the University of Windsor, you are:
  • eligible to choose up to $50,000 in Employee Optional Life coverage and/or $50,000 Employee Optional AD&D coverage within the first 31 days of becoming eligible for benefits without having to provide Proof of Good Health for Life Insurance Carrier approval.
  • eligible to choose $20,000 in Spousal Optional Life and/or $20,000 Spousal Optional AD&D coverage in the first 31 days of becoming eligible for benefits without having to provide Proof of Good Health for your spouse for Life Insurance Carrier approval.
  • Dependent Optional Life, and Dependent Optional AD&D coverage, applicable to child and/or adult dependent, do not require Proof of Good Health. Coverage starts as of the election date or the date of eligibility, whichever comes later.
  • You need to elect Employee Optional AD&D coverage to be able to elect Spousal Optional AD&D or Dependent Optional AD&D coverage.
  • Coverage for Optional Life for Employee/Spouse/Dependent continues until the Employee is 70 years of age, and/or the Spouse or Dependent is considered no longer eligible, whichever comes earlier
  • Coverage for AD&D continues until the Employee retires, or is 65 years of age, whichever comes earlier.
