IBM SPSS Statistics is a powerful statistical software platform. It offers a user-friendly interface and a robust set of features that let you extract actionable insights from your data. Advanced statistical procedures help ensure high accuracy and quality decision making. All facets of the analytics lifecycle are included, from data preparation and management to analysis and reporting.
The latest version supported by IT Services is 30.0
Licensing
There are two types of licenses for SPSS:
- authorized user license ($120 for fac/staff/students)
- concurrent user license, aka network license (currently free)
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IBM is allowing the virtual or home use of SPSS at no cost. It is important to note that this is a temporary accommodation and will expire at IBM’s discretion.
A concurrent user license, which is currently free and therefore the most used, is a "floating" license that can be used simultaneously (concurrently) by a specified number of users. During the installation of SPSS, user is asked which type of license will be used. If Concurrent User option is selected, the license is not activated/authorized during the installation. Instead, it is authorized through an application called the License Manager running on the licensing server license3.uwindsor.ca. Each time SPSS starts up, it communicates with the licensing server and checks if a licenses is currently available. This works only is the computer is on University wired or wireless network or on a VPN connection via GlobalProtect. That's because for security reasons the licensing server is not accessible from the Internet. So if you plan to use this type of license, you must always launch GlobalProtect and establish a VPN connection each time you use SPSS, unless you are on campus.
Faculty, staff and students have the option to purchase an authorised user license. An authorized user license has an associated code that authorizes individual installations of SPSS during the installation. This eliminates the need to use VPN when a computer is not connected to University wired or wireless network. This also allows to use SPSS on a computer that is not connected to the network or Internet. The authorized user license code could be for just one person or for a specified number of users. The same authorization code is valid until the number of authorizations exceeds the specified number.
Managed Work Computers
Software on University-owned computers is managed by Microsoft Intune device management platform. If you need to have IBM SPSS Statistics installed on your work computer, decide which license version will suit you best (see Licensing section above for details). If you decide on authorised user license, submit your request for a license by opening a ticket. To install IBM SPSS Statistics on your work computer running Windows 10 or 11:
- Launch Company Portal app that is already installed on your work computer, or go to University of Windsor Intune Company Portal (https://portal.manage.microsoft.com) and sign in with your UWin Account (Microsoft work or school account), if prompted.
- Click on Apps.
- Search for SPSS.
- Click on the version you want to install (see Licensing section above).
- Click on Install button.
NOTE: If you see a message "Your company hasn't made any apps available to you on this device" it means that your computer does not meet minimum requirements as defined in the device compliance policy (i.e. your device is not compliant). Most likely, it is missing some Windows updates, or is not registered. For more information, please see: BYOD Device Compliance - Windows
You can also have SPSS installed automatically on any work computers that are managed by Intune. To do that, a computer has to be added to "zO365 - Apps - IBM SPSS 30" security group in Azure AD. This can be done by ITS Service Desk staff, or your departmental technician. Once the computer was added to the group, the software will be automatically installed within an hour, as long as the computer is on and connected to the network/Internet.
Unmanaged Computers
If you need to have IBM SPSS Statistics installed on your home computer, follow the steps outlined below.
Note: you must have the Global Protect VPN installed and connected in order to use the Concurrent User license. See below for more details.
- Click on the link below to initiate download of SPSS installer. If prompted, sign in with your UWin Account (Microsoft work or school account).
- Click on Download button then save the file in your Downloads folder. This will take several minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Once the download is complete, launch the installer by opening/running the downloaded file.
- Once the download is complete, run installation file by opening the executable file.
- Select Yes to install
- After Preparing to Install Screen, click Next.
- Select I accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next.
- You can change the Destination Folder if desired, otherwise, click Next.
- Select Install.
- At the end of the installation, start SPSS license authorization wizard, click Finish (if the license wizard does not start, simply run SPSS and that will prompt the license wizard to run).
- Select Concurrent User (for the free version) or Authorised User (if you purchased a license).
- If you selected Concurrent User, enter license04.uwindsor.ca under Licence Manager name and Server IP Address, and then Next and Finish
- If you selected Authorised User, enter the license key code that was provided to you after you purchased your license.
If you opted for the free concurrent user license, your SPSS installation will need to authorise the license by connecting to the licensing server on every use of SPSS. If your computer is not connected to the University wired or wireless network, you need the GlobalProtect app which provides a secure virtual private network (VPN) connection. GlobalProtect will need to be run to establish VPN connection each time SPSS is used. If you need to install GlobalProtect on your computer, click the appropriate link below. You will need to sign in with your UWin Account to access these resources.
