FAQ: Microsoft 365 Apps for Students (formerly Microsoft Office 365)

Active undergraduate and graduate students have access to many tools in Microsoft 365:

  • Office Online (browser-based versions of core Office apps Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
  • Outlook Online
  • OneDrive file storage with 1TB of storage capacity
  • Microsoft Teams
  • SharePoint
  • Microsoft Sway

In addition to these I.T. Services is providing Microsoft 365 Apps (formerly Office 365 Pro Plus) to all active undergraduate and graduate students. This will allow you to install the Microsoft 365 Apps on up to 5 computers (PCs/Macs). The applications installed include:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Publisher (PC only)
  • Microsoft Access (PC only)
  • Microsoft OneNote
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft OneDrive *
  • Microsoft Teams

(*)  Note that your OneDrive file storage is only available while you are an active student - when you leave the University, your OneDrive contents will be removed.

How long do I have access to Microsoft 365 Installed Apps?

As long as you are an enrolled student, you will have access to download and use Microsoft 365 Apps. Access is removed once you have not been enrolled in classes for 3 consecutive semesters. After this time, the software will be deactivated and work in limited functionality mode. Limited functionality mode will allow you to view documents, but not create or edit documents.

How many devices can I install Microsoft 365 Apps on?

You may install Office 365 Pro Plus on up to 5 devices. Note that Office 365 Pro Plus is licensed for use only by the student.

Will I be able to store my documents in OneDrive?

Yes, each student is provided with 1TB of OneDrive storage.

How do I download Microsoft 365 Apps?

You can go to https://portal.office.com On the login page, enter your full UwinID@uwindsor.ca and your password. Click sign in.

Once you log in successfully, you will see the Office 365 Portal. The portal will automatically detect if you are on a PC or a Mac, and present the software download option to you:

Click the Install Office button. You will be prompted to save the download.  Once the download is saved, run it and proceed with the on-screen prompts.

Once the software is installed and you are prompted to activate, use your UwinID@uwindsor.ca as the username and your UWin Account password to activate.

UWin Gmail system has been retired. As of January 2020, all incoming students are being provisioned with Exchange Online e-mail account instead of UWin Gmail account. All users with UWin Gmail accounts in good standing have been migrated to Microsoft 365 / Outlook in Summer 2020.
