The University of Windsor maintains a Unix server named ARC1 (which stands for Academic & Research Computing). It offers a number of Unix applications as well as some analytical programs. To access the ARC1 Server, you’ll need:

To identify if Cortex has been installed on your PC or Mac, look for the following icon (colour may vary):

On Windows devices, the icon will appear in the Windows Tray menu.

(Bottom-Right Corner of the Screen)

On Mac devices, the icon will appear in the macOS Menu Bar.

(Top-Right Corner of the Screen)

To identify if GlobalProtect has been installed on your PC or Mac, look for the following icon (colour may vary):

On Windows devices, the icon will appear in the Windows Tray menu.

(Bottom-Right Corner of the Screen)

On Mac devices, the icon will appear in the macOS Menu Bar.

(Top-Right Corner of the Screen)

Once you have confirmed that both Cortex and GlobalProtect are running, we can move on to accessing the ARC1 Server. This can be done with an SSH Client such as Bitvise, FileZilla, or Putty.

Bitvise

If you’re using Bitvise, you will want to start by ensuring that you're using the default profile. To do this:

  1. Click the Reset Profile option on the left side of the application then click Yes when the Reset Default Profile window appears.

  1. Click the SSH tab along the top of the application.
  2. Click on the blue Key Exchange link and make sure all options have a checkmark next to them and click OK.

  1. You can now go back to the Login page, type arc1.uwindsor.ca into the Host Name box, 22 into the Port box, and type your UWinID into the Username box.
  2. Change the Initial Method to Password, make sure the Store Encrypted Password in Profile box is checked off.
  3. Enter your UWin Account password in the Password box, then click the Log In button.

  1. Finally, click Accept and Save on the Host Key Verification window.

  1. If you followed these steps correctly, you will see an Authentication Completed message at the bottom of the Bitvise window. You can now access the ARC1 Server by opening a New Terminal Console on the left side of the Bitvise menu.

FileZilla

If you’re using FileZilla, you will want to configure a new site in the Site Manager. To do this:

  1. Click on the Site Manager icon in the top-left corner of FileZilla.
  2. Click on New Site and enter arc1.uwindsor.ca as the Site Name.
  3. Select SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol as the Protocol to be used.

  5. Set the Logon Type to Normal, then enter your UWinID in the User box and your UWin Account password in the Password box.
  6. Finally, click Connect.

Note: The next time you use FileZilla to access the ARC1 Server, you will be able to click the Down Arrow next to the Quickconnect button and select your newly configured site from there.
