Backing up files and folders to OneDrive on a Mac

Backing Up Files and Folders to OneDrive

Open OneDrive

1. Open Launchpad and search for OneDrive.

2. Launch the OneDrive app by double-clicking it.

Sign In to OneDrive if prompted.

1. Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.

2. If prompted, choose the location for your OneDrive folder. By default, it will be located under your user account.

Adding Files and Folders to OneDrive

1. Open Finder and navigate to the files or folders you want to back up.

2. Drag and drop the desired files or folders into the OneDrive folder.

3. Alternatively, you can copy and paste files/folders from another location into your OneDrive.

Checking Sync Status

1. The icons next to your files and folders indicate their sync status:

   - A cloud icon means the file is available online.

   - A checkmark icon means the file is available locally and online.

   - A sync icon means the file is currently being synced or is currently open.

2. Also, you can easily check the Sync status by navigating to the top menu bar. If it says, “Your files are synced”, then this means all files that are stored in your OneDrive are synced and successfully backed up.

 

Using Files On-Demand

The Files On-Demand feature allows you to access your OneDrive files without taking up disk space on your Mac.

1. Right-click on any file or folder within your OneDrive folder.

2. Select "Always keep on this device" to make the file available offline.

3. To free up space, select "Free up space" to make the file online-only.

Additional Tips

- To automatically back up your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders, go to OneDrive Preferences and select the "Backup" tab. Click on "Manage backup" and follow the prompts.

- Ensure that OneDrive is set to open at login for continuous backup. In the OneDrive Preferences, check the box next to "Open at login".
