Leddy Remote Chemistry Desktop Lab (Professor Instruction)

Leddy Library with collaboration with ITS has created Virtual Desktops for certain Chemistry courses.

These virtual desktops are for Chemistry courses where additional lab time and experience is needed by students to access specialized Chemistry lab software.  Access is based on registration in certain Chemistry courses per semester.

ACCESS:

Access is provided via a modern web browser so there is no software and/or agent that needs to be installed on the client PC.

FIRST you need to install and connect with Global Protect VPN.  An ITS knowledge base article is available for installation and setup: Knowledge Base - VPN

SECONDLY you can start your session by going to:  https://ledsrv01.uwindsor.ca/guac/#/client/any in your Internet browser and logon with your UWin email and the corresponding password and then pass MFA (Multi Factor Authentication).

1. Sign in with your UWin email 2. Enter your corresponding UWinI email password 3. On your cell phone or MFA device approve the logon request.

VIDEO/AUDIO EXPERIENCE:

Watching video via a virtual desktop is challenging but is possible.  The audio portion of the video should be good but the video may be choppy and/or severely deteriorated depending on server and network load.

STORAGE:

Storage (USB drives etc) cannot be passed through to the virtual desktop running within the browser.  You can TEMPORARILY store your files on the virtual machine desktop but ALL files/changes are deleted upon reboot.  Therefore to "save your work" you can save it to your OneDrive provided by your UofW UWinID account or upload your saved files to another cloud storage that you have personal access too - we do not provide technical support for uploading your files to these 3rd party cloud storage providers.

CHEMISTRY SOFTWARE SUPPORT:

Technical Support for the software within the Virtual Desktops is supported mainly by the Chemistry Technician.  Also aid/tutoring is not available for the chemistry teaching material - this is a self serve service to access the software for your own learning experience.

DEFINITIONS:

2FA: Second (2nd) Factor Authentication is an additional logon process where you are asked more questions to prove your identity.

Client Browser:  A modern Internet browser such as Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox etc installed on the client/student PC.

MFA: Multi Factor Authentication is a method in addition to your password in proving your identity to the system you are trying to logon. This is related to 2FA but allows more then one way to authenticate yourself in addition to your current password.
