How to configure Windows 10 settings on a University-owned PC

This article provides instructions on how to properly configure Windows 10 on a University-owned PC. Note that this article was written for Window 10 version 1809; if your Windows 10 is currently at 1803 or older version, you will need to install 1809 first.

System

Power & sleep

  • Under Sleep, ensure that Never is selected under "When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after." This will ensure that Windows updates can be installed after hours when computer is no longer being used.
    NOTE: As of Aug 20, 2019, this setting is automatically configured via Intune's Device Configuration Profile "Corp - Basic Admin Template" and you will not be able to overwrite it.

About

  • Rename PC to follow the new naming convention so that the computer name matches the official name as set in TDX CMD asset record. When prompted to reboot, select Reboot later.

Network & Internet

Status

NOTE: As of Aug 20, 2019, these DNS search suffixes are automatically added by Intune on every Azure AD joined University PC.

You have to ensure that proper DNS search suffixes are added for your network adapter.

1. Click on Change adapter options in the Change your network settings section

2. Right click on the corrent network conneciton profile, and select Properties from the menu

3. Click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to select it

4. Click on the Properties button

5. Click on the Advanced button

6. Click on the DNS tab

7. Ensure that Append these DNS suffixes (in order) radio button is selcted

8. Click on the Add buton

9. Type in uwinad.uwindsor.ca and click on Add

10. Click on the Add buton again

11. Type in uwindsor.ca and click on Add

12. Click on OK, then OK, then Close to save your changes.

13. Close Network Connections window.

Apps

Apps & features

  • Remove any third party anti-virus software that may have come pre-installed on this computer, such as MacAffe
  • Remove trial versions of any software, such as DropBox

Default Apps

Ensure that Outlook is configured as default e-mail app, rather than Mail.

Time & Language

Date & Time

  • Set time automatically should be On
  • Set the time zone automatically should be On

Region

  • Ensure that Canada is selected in the Region section under Country of region.
  • In the Regional format section, Current format should be set to Recommended [English (Canada)]

Language

  • In the Preferred languages section, English (Canada) should be on the top of the list
    • If it is not on the list, click on Add a language and search for "English (Canada)" tpo add it
    • If it is not in the first position, click on it, and use the arro key buttons to bring it to the top
  • Click on English (Canada) then on Options button. If you see Download language pack button in the Language pack section, click on it to download the language pack. If it was download already, the message "Language pack installed" will be displayed. Click the arrow icon in the top left corner to go back to the previous screen.
  • Ensure that Windows display language in Languages section is set to English (Canada)
  • To ensure that the above settings are propagated to all Windows profiles, click on Administrative language settings link, then click on Copy Settings button. Check both boxes in under Copy current settings to
    • Welcome screen and system accounts
    • New user accounts

This will require a reboot.

Update & Security

Windows Update

  • Click Check for Updates, if updates available then install them all.
  • "Advanced options":
    • "Automatically download updates...." should be On
    • "Show a notification when..." should be On

Make sure that all outstanding Windows Updates are installed. To bring this device into compliance, it should be running windows 10 build 18362.295 (1903 with August cumulative update). If you cannot install the latest updates using Windows Update, use this workaround.
