Enrolling macOS Devices in Apple Business Manager and ADE

Apple devices that weren’t purchased directly from Apple Store for Education can be manually added Apple Business Manager (ABM) and enrolled in ADE using Apple Configurator app. To enrol macOS devices, you will need to use Apple Configurator app installed on an iPhone running iOS 16.0 or later. While there is a version of this app for macOS, it can only be used to enrol iOS and iPadOS devices, not macOS devices. The Mac device being enrolled using this method must be equipped with Apple silicon or with an Apple T2 Security Chip and must be running macOS 12.0.1 or later.

Apple Configurator Setup

  1. Make sure your iPhone has a working WiFi connection.
  2. Go to Apple App Store and download/install Apple Configurator app.
  3. Launch Apple Configurator.
  4. Enter your Managed Apple ID credentials that you use to sign into ABM.
  5. Go to Settings in the Apple Configurator app, then do the following:
    • Select the network configuration profile you want to use: Don't Share
    • Select the MDM server assignment method: Specific then Microsoft Intune.

Mac Enrolment

To enrol a Mac that has already been setup and used, you will need to perform macOS reset first. If it's a brand new Mac that is not in ABM, unpack it and follow these steps:

  1. Launch Apple Configurator on your iPhone.
  2. Enter your Managed Apple ID credentials that you use to sign into ABM.
  3. If this is a laptop, plug it into a power source so it doesn’t go to sleep during the process.
  4. If the Mac is connecting to the Internet using Ethernet, plug in all necessary cables and adapters.
  5. Start up the Mac.
  6. Select the language in Setup Assistant, click Continue, then stop when you see the Country or Region pane.
Note: You must restart the Mac if you go past the Country or Region pane.
  7. Bring your iPhone close to the Mac, then do one of the following:
    • Scan the image that appears in Setup Assistant.
    • Click Pair Manually in the lower-left corner of the Setup Assistant, then tap Manual Pairing in Apple Configurator and enter the six-digit code that appears
  8. The serial number and other information about the Mac are uploaded to Apple Business Manager. Wait for the process to complete, then click Shut Down to turn off the Mac.
  9. Sign into Apple Business Manager to confirm that your Mac was added and that the Intune server is listed as MDM.
  10. Sign into Intune Admin Centre and do the following
    • Go to Devices > Enrolment > Apple > Enrolment program tokens > Microsoft Intune
    • Click on Devices
    • Click on Sync to force the sync with ABM. Normally, the sync takes place only once every 24 hours.
    • Search for your device by serial number after hitting Refresh. Do not proceed with next step until your device comes up in the search.
  11. Power the Mac back-up and go through Setup Assistant screens. If the University of Windsor device enrolment screen does not come up in Setup Assistant after the Country or Region screen, power your Mac down, wait an hour and then try again.
