How can I rebuild my corrupted Lotus Notes bookmark file?

Sometimes your Lotus Notes bookmark file (../Notes/Data/bookmark.nsf) can become corrupt, and this can manifest itself in a few different ways:

  • When you start Notes and try to open your mailbox, an error messages comes up that says "Can't find View".
  • When you start Notes an error message comes up that says "This workspace page cannot be used for database icons"
  • Your Notes is crashing frequently
  • Lotus Notes takes a very long time to start
  • Some folders like "Applications", or "Favourite Bookmarks" are missing from the bookmark bar or Open button menu.
  • Workspace icon is missing from "Applications" folders on the bookmark bar or Open button menu.

In order to resolve this issue, you have to rebuild your corrupted bookmark.nsf following these steps:

1. Shut down Lotus Notes

2. Lauch Windows Explorer and find a file called bookmark.nsf. It will be located in one of these folders:

 - C:\lotus\notes\data\

 - C:\Program Files\Lotus\Notes\Data\

 - C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\Data\

Rename bookmark.nsf to bookmark.old. Make sure that you do not rename bookmark.ntf file by mistake (note .nsf vs .ntf file name extension)

3. Start Lotus Notes. It will recreate bookmark.nsf file using the template (bookmark.ntf). Some settings (like your 'home page' appearance) may change to their default values as a result of that. You will need to change them back to your liking.
