Getting Windows 10 out of S Mode

Only a small number of PCs are shipped with Windows 10 in S Mode, which is a more limited, locked-down Windows 10 operating system. In S Mode, you can only install apps from the Microsoft Store, and you can only browse the web with Microsoft Edge (ie. you will not be able to install Chrome or Firefox browsers). The intent of S Mode is to provide greater security, speed, and stability. Because Windows can only run apps from the Store, malware from the web won’t be able to run.

For University users, the limitations of S Mode are not acceptable. They need to run applications that aren’t available in the Microsoft Store, and may need to use other browsers. If a computer came with Windows running in S Mode, you must disable S Mode to install all required apps. Windows 10 in S Mode is just a special mode of the normal, existing editions of Windows 10. So, for example, your PC either came with Windows 10 Home in S Mode or Windows 10 Professional in S Mode. When you leave S Mode, you’ll be using a standard edition of either Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Professional, depending on which edition your PC came with.

To get the computer out of S Mode and switch its edition from Home or Professional to Enterprise, follow these steps:

1. Go to Windows 10 Settings: System > About

2. In Windows Specifications section, click on Change product key or switch to Windows 10 Pro link

3. On Activation screen, click on Go to the Store link

4. On the Microsoft Store screen, under "Need more info" section click on the Update Microsoft Store link

5. When prompted "Did you mean to switch aps?" say Yes

6. Once the store is updated, enter "S Mode" in the search bar and select Switch out of S mode

7. Click on Get button

8. Use these credentials to sign in

9. After entering credentials, do NOT click on "Next" ; Instead, click on Microsoft apps only link on the left

10. Click on Install button

11. Close the Store window and in Settings window click on Change product key link

12. If this computer is to be joined to AD Domain, enter this license key. Otherwise, enter this license key and click on Next, then Start
