How to Make Changes to a Course Homepage in Brightspace

Instructors can customize their course homepage by changing which widgets appear on the homepage and in what order by the steps below.

  1. Navigate to your course and click Course Tools and select Course Admin.
  2. Under Site Setup, click Homepages.

  3. From here you can:
    1. make a copy of an existing homepage and edit it, or
    2. create a homepage from scratch.

Copy and Edit an Existing Homepage

All new course sites are provided a default homepage. In order to make edits to it, you must first make a copy of it and then edit the copy.  The name of the homepage you are using will appear in the Active Homepage box. (If your course has a homepage that has been created from a copy or from scratch, you will be able to click on its name in the Homepages list and skip to step 3.)

  1. To copy a homepage, click the arrow to the right of the active homepage name and select Copy.
  2. Click on the name of the copy you just created.

  3. Change the name and description, if you wish.
  4. To change the layout, click Change Layout, select from the options in the pop-up, and click Update.

  5. Move widgets around by clicking and dragging them to the desired location.
  6. Remove widgets by hovering over them and clicking the X that appears in the top right corner of the widget.
  7. Add widgets to a panel by clicking Add Widgets at the bottom of the panel and selecting one or several of the system widgets available. Then click Add.
  8. When you are finished making your changes, click Save and Close.

  9. Your edited homepage will be visible in the Homepages list. Click in the box under Active Homepage and select the edited homepage, then click Apply.

  10. To edit the homepage further, click on its name again.

Create a New Homepage

Instead of editing an existing homepage, you can create a brand new one.

  1. Click the Create Homepage button.

  2. Give your homepage a Name (required) and a Description (optional but recommended).
  3. You can select a different layout by clicking Change Layout, selecting from the options in the pop-up, and clicking Update.
  4. The chosen layout will be shown at the bottom of the page. Click Add Widgets at the bottom of one of the panels and select one or several of the system widgets available.

  5. Click Add to add it to the panel.

  6. Repeat the previous two steps in each of the panels until you have all the widgets in the appropriate panels. Click Save and Close when done.
  7. Your new homepage will be visible in the Homepages list. Click in the box under Active Homepage and select the Homepage you have just created, then click Apply.

  8. To edit the homepage further, click on its name in the Homepages list.
