Prepare your file
Before you begin, be sure the file you want to import is set up correctly. It must be in CSV, TSV or TXT format and column titles must be correctly labelled. (See Creating Grade Items in Excel for Importing to Brightspace). It is essential to follow all the formatting principles and accepted fields outlined in Brightspace to successfully import your grades.
If you are importing grades from a Scantron report, see How to Import a Scantron Report to Brightspace.
If you are not importing from a Scantron file, see Creating Grade Items in Excel for Importing to Brightspace for more information.
NOTE: The Calculated Final Grade column cannot be imported as Brightspace automatically calculates the final grade and grades in the Calculated Final Grade column cannot be manually changed. Manually edited final grades appear in the Adjusted Final Grades column and this column can be exported and/or imported.
Import your file
-
Navigate to your course site on Brightspace and click Grades in the Nav bar.
-
Select the Enter Grades tab. (Here you will find the Export button to export the existing Gradebook to make adjustments offline, if you want.)
- Click Import. (Here you will find the link to download the Grades_Sample_Import_File to use as a template to create your own file, if you want.). See the end of this document for explanations of the required keywords for column titles.

- Click Choose File and Browse and select the file to import. (Here you can select a file created from the sample file or from an export.)
- Check the Item Creation check box to create new columns that are not automatically recognized by Brightspace. Select this option only if you have not already created the associated grade item in the Brightspace Gradebook.
- Click Continue.

- If there are no errors, click Continue again.

- Review the import preview to ensure there are no errors and then click Import to finalize the process. The imported grades should now be visible on the Enter Grades page.
