Y2K20 Why?

Tags y2k20

In this article we answer the fundamental question: Why? If you are comfortable using Windows 7 and a familiar, yet old, version of Microsoft Office you may be asking “Why bother with this trouble?”

The basic answer involves three points:

  • Microsoft will stop publishing updates for Windows 7 in January 2020. This means that there will be no more updates and security fixes after that date.
  • Microsoft will turn off access to network resources (like your Inbox and OneDrive files) for older versions of Office in October 2020. That means you can’t use an old Outlook to view your email.
  • Having different versions of Office is preventing the campus from using the latest sharing and collaboration tools and causing too much confusion.
