After a student graduates, their UWin Account type automatically transitions from "Undergraduate Student (U)" or "Graduate Student (G)" to "Alumni (A)." This transition involves a change in Microsoft licensing resulting in a removal of access to several resources, as explained below.
Email
E-mail address and mailbox associated with the account will remain active but since alumni are not licensed to use Outlook desktop or mobile apps to manage it, they need to use Outlook web app to access their mailbox using this URL: https://outlook.office.com
Microsoft 365 Apps (formerly MS Office)
Alumni are not entitled to any Microsoft 365 Apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. except Outlook web app.
OneDrive
Alumni accounts are not licensed to use OneDrive. Any files that they may have had on their OneDrive before their graduation, were deleted during the transition of the account type from U or G to A. Deleted files can no longer be recovered.
Sharing with Alumni
If you want to share files with alumni then you are limited to inviting them to Teams meetings where they can participate, and sharing links to documents (or folders) from OneDrive or SharePoint. You can share a folder for read only, or for reading and writing. Since alumni don’t have access to Microsoft 365 Apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint (desktop or web), they will need to have their own personal licence to be able to edit and create files.
Teams
Alumni accounts are not licensed to use Teams. Using their @uwindsor.ca email addresses, alumni are not able to:
- Schedule a Teams meeting
- Be a member of a Team or channel (however, alumni can be added to a team or channel as guest user using their external e-mail address)
- Upload a file to a Teams meeting chat
However, they are able to:
- Join a Teams meeting
- Open a shared file link on-line
Intune-managed Devices
Alumni accounts cannot be used to sign into Windows on any Intune-managed University workstations (eg. computer labs, classrooms, etc.). They also cannot be used to enrol personal BYOD devices in Intune.
